I grew up hearing my mom read aloud Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books. When I was 7, it was the first series I ever read by myself. I recently re-read all of them, and I appreciate the series so much more the older I am. It never ceases to amaze me how the pioneers forged new lives for themselves out of nothing. Many things boggle my mind how they survived, but especially this one: only the wealthy owned books! It was something close to miraculous if a farmer owned a bookshelf with actual books in it. Since it’s National Library Week, that’s something to remember. We must never take our libraries, librarians, and books for granted!
After re-reading the series, I also read I Remember Laura, which is recollections about Laura from the people who knew her, and Words from a Fearless Heart, a collection of Laura’s quotes from her diaries. Check them out of the library the next time you’re there; it’s uncanny how accurate her perceptions of the future were!
Below is one of my favorite quotes from Words from a Fearless Heart. I printed it and hung it over my desk. Sometimes I need this daily reminder to quit dreaming so much and start making my dreams a reality.
We must first see the vision in order to realize it; we must have the ideal or we cannot approach it. But when once the dream is dreamed, it is time to wake up and get busy. We must do great deeds, not dream them all day long.

I remember the Little House series, too! I loved it when I was young--I remember my mom reading them to me. That's a great quote :)
i've never actually read any of them. Which makes me sad.
I did, however, sometimes watch the tv show.
Does that count?
Alexandra- It's one of my favorite quotes. It reminds to get my rear in gear and WRITE!
Falen- You must read the books! The television series is completely different so it doesn't count, lol.
Nice post! I love that quote. It's awesome! I read the Little House books too when I was a kid. I inherited the whole box set from my sister when she outgrew them. I remember being fascinated with how the pioneers lived... making their own soap and sugar and building their own houses and so on... so interesting!
Thanks for the nostalgia! :D
Oh, I just love her. Although, as a kid, I used to watch Little House on the Prairie, and I totally thought it was real. I couldn't understand how they got the cameras to film back then. I was such a knucklehead.
B.Miller- It's amazing how they used every bit of the animals and every bit of the land, isn't it? Compared to them, I feel like I don't know how to do anything!
Carolina- Oh my gosh, that is so cute! Yes, incredible how they had video cameras but still needed lanterns, lol. It's hilarious the things we used to think when we were little!
Laura, do you read minds or something? This weekend I found my set of the Little House series in my attic and am currently re-reading them as a trip down memory lane. How funny!
Ha never read the books but loved playing the Oregon Trail game lol. But those books will def go on my list of books to read!
Alyson- Oooh, bizarre! Maybe subconsciously I do read minds, haha. That's awesome you're re-reading Little House. Those books me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! I love them all, but On the Banks of Plum Creek is my favorite. :) I thought it was so cool they lived in an underground house! And I can't help but giggle with glee when Laura gets her revenge on mean Nellie Oleson. Hope you're enjoying your trip down memory lane!
T.J.- Haha, Oregon Trail! I loved that game, too. Definitely read the Little House books!
Little House in the Big Woods was always my favorite but I love them all!
I remember thinking that traveling by covered wagon would be pretty awesome too.
Tara- ME TOO! I suppose our family vacations pulling a pop-up camper was similar. Except for those minor details like no horses, driving across two states in one day, stopping at nice restaurants, indoor plumbing at the campground... Ok, I guess it's not that similar.
