Monday Quote Day!

“Great writers arrive among us like new diseases–threatening, powerful, impatient for patients to pick up their virus, irresistible.” ~Craig Raine
“Part of the fright comes out of lack of preparedness. As you know from school, it’s when you have not prepared for the test that you have the fear of failing. And if you have prepared, even if you fail, you’ve done your best.” ~Alice Walker
“If I’ve learned anything worth remembering in my life, it’s that a writer must be true to himself.” ~Doug Hawk
“Writing is not different from life–you want variety, you want refreshment, and you want balance.” ~Alice Walker
“What is the greatest reward a writer can have? Isn’t it the way when someone rushes up to you, his face bursting with honesty, his eyes afire with admiration and cries, ‘That new story of your was fine, really wonderful!’ ” ~Ray Bradbury
“A writer, to be connected to the world, should have a circle that cares about the world. And out of that would come the writing. For me, writing has always come out of living a fairly to-the-bone kind of life, just really being present to a lot of life. The writing has been really a byproduct of that.” ~Alice Walker
“I think if you’re a real writer, then you don’t have to worry too much about originality. What you do will be different and will have your own stamp on it anyway.” ~Ken Follett
“I like to know where I’m going, but after that I like to think of the book as being an adventure. I have this mantra: Serve the story, listen to the story. Often the story knows better than I do what it wants to be.” ~David Morrell
“If there’s a way to make it better, you have to do it.” ~Ken Follett
“Be a first-rate version of yourself, not a second-rate version of another writer.” ~David Morrell

Good morning, Laura. I love the Morrell quote about "the story knows better than I do what it wants to be" line. That one just inspired me! I need that in a poster or a postcard that I can keep in front of me...
Take care and thanks for posting,

-Jimmy

But just how does one become a first-rate version of themselves? Thanks for the thought-provoking quotes :)

I love the one about writers being true to themselves. and we have to be honest with ourselves, if we can! Thanks.
