Wednesday's Writing Workout!

Danell Leyva (USA)

On the weekends, prompts keep my creativity warmed up so I don’t “pull a muscle” on Monday morning. During the week, prompts jump-start my writing routine. Consider using your own characters and settings for these prompts. You might come up with dazzling new ideas for your WiP! All you’ll need for these exercises is your writing materials and an open mind. Remember to drink lots of water and stretch!
Start it up!
Exercise 1
You find a huge dent and chipped paint on your fancy-schmancy expensive car. The suspects: The teenager with a new driver’s license. The spouse with road rage. The neighbor with jealousy. The trash collector without a tip in five years. Write it!
Ramp it up!
Exercise 2
Write a scene or story in which trouble brews from a typo: a misspelled road sign, a mistaken measurement in a cookbook, the wrong name on a wedding invitation.
Burn it up!
Exercise 3: from Writer’s Digest
Around mid-morning one day, you realize that everything that’s happening seems really familiar. After much thought you discover that: A) you’re reliving a day from your past; B) a dream/nightmare that you’ve had is now happening for real; or C) your life has fallen into a terrible rut and now you must take drastic measures to find a way out of it. Write one or more of the three.
Cool it down.
Exercise 4
While cleaning out your closet, you find an undeveloped roll of film. You develop the photos and long-forgotten memories come rushing back to you. Write the scene.
Every Wednesday I post prompts and exercises for your “writing workout” so keep checking back! Happy writing!!!

In my house, I am the spouse with road rage... oops! Thanks for the great prompts as always, Laura!

Oh, I love number two! I actually have a scene in my newest novel about that. Thanks, Laura!

Number 3 is just like a story idea I have! Love!

Laura, the roll of film...some would not be able to even relate to that (digital age) but I can. That would be fun to try. :)

We're supposed to tip the trash collectors?

I say the trash collector did it!

Great prompts!

A while back I had an idea for a story based around number 2. Now I'm racking my brains trying to remember what it was. Thanks for the prompt - I'm sure I wrote the idea down somewhere! Happy writing. :)

Misha- Thanks! I hope you do. :)

Bluestocking- LoL! You're the culprit!

Talli- Cool! Good luck with your scene!

Hannah- Awesome and good luck with it!

Roxane- LoL, I know what you mean! I forget that the younger definition won't know what that is. :)

Diane- Hahaha! If you want to. My parents always do around the holidays to the mail carriers and trash/recycling collectors to show their appreciation. It's a kind gesture, but I guess not everyone does it?

Summer- Maybe he did! It's tough times out there and tips are vital!

J.A.- Thank you! I'm glad you stopped by. :)

Jayne- Ooo, I hope you remember what it is! Hopefully the prompt will jog your memory. Good luck!
