Wednesday's Writing Workout!

Jordyn Wieber (USA)

On the weekends, prompts keep my creativity warmed up so I don’t “pull a muscle” on Monday morning. During the week, prompts jump-start my writing routine. Consider using your own characters and settings for these prompts. You might come up with dazzling new ideas for your WiP! All you’ll need for these exercises is your writing materials and an open mind. Remember to drink lots of water and stretch!
Start it up!
Exercise 1
Write about your character’s hair. What kind of cut/style/color does he like? Does she switch it up every season or has it been the same since 1987? What does this say about your character’s personality? High maintenance? Low maintenance? Insecure? Proud? Indifferent?
Ramp it up!
Exercise 2
Remember the odd kid in middle school no one wanted to sit next to? He (or she) returns to town, looking and acting completely different. Write it.
Burn it up!
Exercise 3: from Writer’s Digest
Your kids have spent years asking you to get them a dog. You finally break down and get one, only to discover that this dog talks—but only to you. More interestingly, the dog loves to gossip about your kids and their lives. Write a scene where your dog rats out one of your kids for doing something they shouldn't.
Cool it down.
Exercise 4
Write a scene from your life as it would be now if you had married your first boyfriend or girlfriend.
Every Wednesday I post prompts and exercises for your “writing workout” so keep checking back! Happy writing!!!

And could you imagine if it was a sarcastic dog who commented on your action all day? Could be kind of funny. :)

Hmm... I have the same haircut since 1987....I wonder what that means.

Thanks, Laura!

Oh! These are great. And in reference to the pic, I used to want to be a gymnast when I was younger because the USA gymnasts were so amazing! The hair prompt is so great because it's easy to overlook your character's hair. Haha, exercise 4 is along the premise of my novel, lol.

P.S. Your page about books by bloggers is wonderful and SO organized. I got Alex C's book over the summer and am definitely going to check out Talli's. Thanks!

Laura- It sure would! If it was someone else's dog that is, haha.

Eve- You're welcome! I hope you're having a great week. :)

Elisabeth- I'm glad you like them! I hope you come up with something new and dazzling!

Jolene- Thank youuuu!!!

CN- That's what I like to hear! Hope you get to write something from it. :)

Bluestocking- LoL! Hope you're having a great week!

Saumya- I'm glad you like today's exercises! Gymnastics is my favorite sport. I did it for a few years and have been an avid fan since I was very little. :) I'm glad you like the books page! I like having it all in one place so I remember whose books to check out and I figured others might like to know, too!

I really like these prompts and a lot of prompts don't inspire me. Though I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to tackle #4. I am so, so, so thankful I didn't marry that guy!!!

I am excited about these writing prompts. Actually, I am a little afraid to work with the fourth one. I am not sure I am ready to face what jumps from my brain ( & maybe a little bit of my heart) to paper.

I am a new follower & I am happy to be here

Margo- That makes me happy to hear! And I'm think you definitely need to do #4! It sounds like you have an interesting story there!

Melissa- Hello and welcome to Wavy Lines! If you're afraid to work with a prompt, that's a sure sign you should try it. Something amazing is inside you waiting to show up on the page! Thanks for stopping by and commenting and I appreciate the follow!
