Do You Obey the Call?

Lucy Maud Montgomery
But the materials of story weaving are the same in all ages and all places–births, deaths, marriages, scandals–these are the only really interesting things in the world. So she settled down very determinedly and happily to her pursuit of fame and fortune–and of something that was neither. For writing, to Emily Byrd Starr, was not primarily a matter of worldly lucre or laurel crown. It was something she had to do. A thing–an idea–whether of beauty or ugliness, tortured her until it was ‘written out.’ Humorous and dramatic by instinct, the comedy and tragedy of life enthralled her and demanded expression through her pen. A world of lost but immortal dreams, lying just beyond the drop-curtain of the real, called to her for embodiment and interpretation–called with a voice she could not, dared not, disobey.
{L.M. Montgomery, from EMILY’S QUEST, 1927}

I discovered the delightful, imaginative red-head Anne Shirley when I was eight years old and fell head-over-heels in love with all of the books. Anne of Green Gables (#1) and Anne’s House of Dreams (#5) are my two favorites in the series. I was aware that Montgomery had written other books for children, but I never sought them out. I guess it’s because I had such a girl crush on Anne that I didn’t feel it was necessary to read any of Montgomery’s other work. How silly of me! (Love is blind, as they say.)

I finally got around to reading the Emily series, and while Anne is still my favorite, Emily is a special heroine, too. What I liked most about the series is Emily’s devotion to writing. Anne is a writer, too, but she doesn’t actively pursue publication the way Emily does. I love the above quote so much because it’s perfectly said about how I, and I’m sure many of you, feel about writing.

I’m not sure how often I’ll be posting on my blog this year. I’ve got BIG writing plans for 2013, and I'm determined to be published in some way (whether it’s a novel or a tiny story) before age 30, which is rapidly approaching. Okay, not for another three years. But still! Every year seems to pass faster than the one before it. So I’m not sure how dedicated to blogging I’ll be. Though I’m for sure participating in April’s A to Z Blogging Challenge again! I really enjoy that blogfest. :)

My blog posting will probably be sporadic on Wednesdays and Fridays for now. But I’ll definitely continue posting quotes on Monday! I have so many wonderful ones already saved that’ll fill up many Mondays to come! I love sharing with you the quotes that inspire, encourage, and motivate me in the hopes that at least one will do the same for you, too.

What does writing mean to you in 2013? Have you made your writing goals for this year? Do you obey the call?

Have a wonderful weekend, Zigzaggers!!!

This year, I won't be posting like a crazy lady this year either. Depending on what I get finished with a project I'm working on, will tell me if I'll participate in the A to Z blogging.

The goal this year is to finish a current project and get Secondhand SHoes out on Kindle. It's already available in paperback.

Hugs and Chocolate,
Shelly

YES! We totally have the same goal. I would love to be published before age 30 and I've only got a few years left before that happens. I hope 2013 will be a BIG year for both of us and that we meet our goals. Sending good vibes!!! (And I LOVE the Anne series, but have never read Emily!)

Well, you know how slacker I am with the blog posting. I've never been a regular poster/blogger. (my goal is to pull off one post a month...every month. That will be a huge improvement for me.) But yes, focus on the real writing.
Also, dude, the hell? You're only 26-27...and you feel pressure? Le sigh.

Happy 2013! :)

I have big writing goals this year too and for that reason, I'm not sure how much blogging I'll be doing either. It just doesn't seem so important...not when compared with writing.

This year I'll be finishing my WIP, which should be pretty easy given how fast I type and write. I'm no stranger to knocking off a first draft of a saga in just a few months. I'm undecided about doing the next book in that family saga or one of my shorter (by my standards) books after that. I'd love to be traditionally published before I'm 35 or even 40, but I'm very open to indie and e-publishing in the meantime.

Good for you!

I'm trying to make writing goals for the year now. It helps me stay focused.

Shelly- Good luck with your goals!! Happy New Year!

Julie- Definitely read the Emily trilogy! It's delightful. Good luck with your 2013 goals!!

Lola- LoL, it's just that I've been writing for a looong time and have wanted to be an author since I could write. So it feels like it's time to get what I want already!!

Clarissa- I noticed the blogosphere isn't as hopping as it was when I started blogging nearly 3 years ago. Some have moved on to just being on twitter or facebook.

CarrieAnne- I'm sure you will be published no matter which path you choose! Good luck with your series!!

Jennifer- It helps me stay focused, too. Good luck with your writing goals and happy new year!!

I do have a few goals, but mostly I resolved to just enjoy the act of writing this year. To just...be. :)

This year I plan to work on a series for the lower Middle Grade age group.

Hey I never knew about Emily - only the more famous Anne. Thanks for this post, I loved it.

Actually, I do obey the call, and this year I want to write book two of my middle grade mystery series (I got an agent this year for book one.) I also want to enter some contests.

But I love the passage you chose to quote. I liked Anne of Green Gables, but never read the Emily series. I'll definitely check into it. I live 5 blocks from a used book store, a very dangerous location for someone like me. :-)

Oh, gosh, Laura! I too have loved Anne since I was a little girl, and read her whole series over and over and over again! But I haven't read Emily. I guess maybe I should :) Good luck with your writing goals this year - keep us posted! I also want to spend more time writing - it's hard to balance with blogging time!

Hope you have a great year and accomplish everything you want. I aim to publish at least one book by the end of the year. Don't worry too much about age, although you've got plenty of time on your side - I wanted to publish by 30 too but I'm a couple of years past that!

You go girl!! Of course we'll miss your postings...but you can totally make up for it with one that starts off...I'M BEING PUBLISHED.

Hahahaha I'll be going in the other direction blogging wise. Hedging my bets in case I have to go the self or small publishing route, so I'm planning on aggressive blog expansion this year.

Which, of course, takes time. But will hopefully be worth it.

As for the call, yes I definitely do. Good thing too, because I have something like five rewrites I want to do this year. And two drafts. EEEK!

Oh yeah. And querying. EEEEEEEEK!

Raquel- That's a great goal! We should all strive to enjoy writing and not let the stress of it all take away why we like to write.

Rachna- That sounds great! Good luck and have fun!

Nas- L.M. Montgomery wrote many wonderful books for children, not just Anne and Emily!

Elizabeth- Congratulations on your agent! Wishing you lots of luck with your goals this year. I hope you find the Emily trilogy and enjoy it!

Susanna- Writing is definitely most important right now. Thanks for the well wishes!!

Nick- Hello and welcome to Wavy Lines! Well, I wanted to publish by age 26 and that didn't happen, LoL. So I have a new goal, but I won't be discouraged if I don't make it this time either. Hopefully I will, though!! Wishing you lots of luck with your goals. Thanks for visiting and commenting!

DL- HERE'S HOPING!!!

Misha- Good luck with your writing and blogging goals!! 2013 is going to be a great year!
